The Netherlands is not exactly the first country that springs to mind when it comes to mining. The mines there were closed down years ago. Nevertheless, thanks to Weir Minerals, the Netherlands is a major player in the field of mining technology, and in particular the transportation of raw materials and minerals.
Powerful industrial drives from SEW-EURODRIVE
Weir Minerals received a request to supply pumps for transporting tailings for a mining company in Finland. Weir Minerals Netherlands specified three of its largest pumps, the GEHO® TZPM 2000, and received the contract for the project. The OEM contacted SEW-EURODRIVE in the Netherlands to provide the industrial gear units. Ruud Puts, Weir project purchaser for drive systems: “We were familiar with SEW-EURODRIVE through collaborations on previous projects with smaller gear units and gearmotors. After visiting the SEW IG plants in Finland, Brazil and Germany, and following the contacts we established in the Netherlands, we came to the conclusion that SEW-EURODRIVE could supply the perfect product for this project and for a new reduction gear for our in-house test stand in Venlo.”
The existing reduction gear for the test stand had to be replaced because the torque absorbed by the pumps for the Finland project and several others was too high. “We were able to award SEW-EURODRIVE the contract for this, too, because it made an attractive offer with a short delivery time,” adds Puts. For the gear units that are used for the project in Finland and the test stand at Weir in Venlo, SEW made use of its global network and contacted SEW Finland. Apart from the logistic advantages this provided, SEW Finland specializes in manufacturing customer-specific industrial gear units with short delivery times.
WEIR needed three industrial gear units for their largest pumps GEHO® TZPM 2000 that would be used in a mining project in Finland. To be able to test the pump installation and assure quality, the in-house test stand also needed a new industrial gear unit that could test these large pumps and future projects.
In cooperation with SEW Finland, SEW Netherlands delivered an M1PSF150 single-stage helical-bevel gear unit with a K107R77DRE90M4 helical-bevel gearmotor for the test stand in Venlo. This is a single-stage version of the gear units that were provided for the mining project in Finland.
The new test stand means pumps can now be tested that generate torque of up to 456 kNm at 20 to 24 revolutions a minute.
